Macaroni Review ~ OneRx

By Leslie Risley, Macaroni Kid Thornton-Northglenn-Brighton-E. Westminster October 8, 2015

Whether you are an extreme couponer or just looking to get the best prices on prescription medications, you will love the new OneRx app, available for iOS (Apple) and Android mobile devices. OneRx is free, with no “in-app purchases”. Yes, it’s totally, completely free.

These days, comparison-shopping is the norm. If you’re like me, you look around online for the best price before buying just about everything. But have you ever considered that prescription medicines can have different prices, too? And did you know that there are often manufacturer coupons – coupons that the pharmaceutical companies offer – that you can redeem for your medications? OneRx will find those coupons for you, and all you have to do is show your smartphone to the pharmacist in order to redeem them.

OneRx is the only app that allows you to search for generic and brand name prescription drugs, compare prices both with and without insurance benefits, and locate the nearest pharmacy with the best prices. That sure would have come in handy when BOTH of my kiddos got ear infections while we were on vacation ~ I could have saved my money for something more fun than antibiotics, and gotten back to the beach a lot sooner!

I have been playing around with the OneRx app for a few weeks now, and I love how simple it is to use. You’ll want to begin by uploading your insurance information, which involves taking photos of the front and the back of your insurance card. (There is an option to enter your information manually if you’d rather not send a photo of your card.) Notice that you are advised to wait 24 hours for your insurance information to be approved. Normally the approval process is much faster, but sometimes less common insurance carriers take a little longer. Note: You do not need insurance to use the OneRx app.

Sometimes you’ll get a better price using the OneRx savings card than you will by using your insurance benefits. Never fear, OneRx will let you know if that’s the case.

Results are sorted by price, and then distance.

If this is a medication you refill regularly, click the star in the upper right corner to add it to your favorites.

OneRx will even alert you if a medication is not covered by your insurance plan, or if prior authorization is required. Be sure to check any new prescriptions given to you by your doctor while you’re still in the office, and save yourself frustration at the pharmacy checkout.

Tips and additional information:

  • It’s important to get everything set up ahead of time in the OneRx app, so that when you’re “in the moment”, it just takes a couple clicks to start finding prices and pharmacies.
  • Results can be sorted by price or by distance. Sometimes you just want the closest pharmacy, while other times you’re willing to drive a little bit farther to get a better deal.
  • Pharmacy information includes address and hours.
  • Both local/independent and the larger chain pharmacies are included in search results.
  • With OneRx, you always have your insurance card with you, right in the app, if you choose to upload your insurance information.
  • You can create separate accounts if you need to look up information for different people with different insurance plans. Just sign in as that person and you’re good to go.
I highly recommend downloading OneRx and giving it a try today!
