Macaroni History ~ Father's Day

June 13, 2012
Celebrated on the 3rd Sunday in June Father’s Day was created for children to honor their fathers.

We all know fathers and father figures deserve recognition, but what you may not know is how the tradition turned into a national day.

It all started in 1909 with a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. While listening to a Mother’s Day sermon, Sonora came up with the idea for Father’s Day as a way to honor her father, Henry Jackson Dodd. Having been raised by her father after her mother’s death, Sonora wanted a way to show him how much she appreciated all of his courage, selflessness, and sacrifice.  Since Henry’s birthday took place in the month of June, Sonora decided to honor her father during his special month, and the first Father’s Day celebration was held in Spokane on the 19th of June 1910.

In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father's Day and, in 1972, President Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the the third Sunday in June.

We here at Macaroni Kid would like to wish every father, step-father, and father figure a fabulous Father’s Day and hope you are surrounded by all those who appreciate your hard work, unconditional love and sacrifice!

Father’s Day Fun Fact: Roses are the official flower of Father's Day: Red for a living father and white for those who have passed.

“When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.”  ~ Mark Twain
