This Mom's CrossFit Fitness Journey

I hope you will join me!

By Leslie Risley, Macaroni Kid Thornton-Northglenn-Brighton October 29, 2013
Many people wait until the new year to tackle their health/fitness goals, but this year I am getting a head start. I have just signed on with CrossFit Thornton to get this body into shape! Over the next months I will be sharing my journey with you, and I'm hoping that some of you will join me in the process!

Chances are, you've heard of CrossFit before. Maybe you even have an opinion about it. If so, I'm telling you to set that aside. I am not an uber-fit, super-strong woman. In fact, I have very little upper body strength, hardly any muscular endurance, and a decent amount of body fat to lose. (I hope my smaller clothes will still be in style when they fit me again...) If I can do this, anyone can.

I actually started at CrossFit Thornton a few weeks ago, just to kind of get a feel for things and get my feet wet. {Side note: I did miss more than a week when I went to Florida, so I'm counting this as Week 1, just in time for the Mac Kid debut. :)} I was so nervous heading into my first workout. You know that sick-to-your-stomach feeling you used to get before the first day of school? Um, was that just me? Well, think of a time when you were nervous; that's how I felt. But I put on a brave face and headed in for my first training session. Yay, Victory #1! Was I weak? Yes. Was I sore the next day? OMG, yes. Did I want to go back and get stronger? Yup. Honestly, once the session started I was fine. Silly me. I've heard people say they were "addicted" after one CrossFit workout. That actually was not the case for me...for me, it took three workouts to become addicted. I can't wait to see - and show you - how my body changes!

One of the things that concerned me with CrossFit was getting injured. I looked around at a few local boxes (CrossFit for "gyms"), and one thing that appealed to me about CrossFit Thornton was that their classes were a little smaller than some of the other places. Now that I've been there a few times, I can also tell you that the coaches want you to have good form before you start adding a bunch of weight. Makes sense, right? I have to giggle at my "PR's" (personal records) right now, because I'm a newbie, but I know they will get better and, when they do, I will be doing the movements correctly.

If you have been considering starting a CrossFit program, NOW is a great time! Wouldn't it be nice to get in better shape over the holidays rather than take a step backward? If we can coordinate schedules I will even go to your first class with you if you'd like! Just shoot me an email and we can work out the details.
