Easy Prep Tailgate Treats

By Mary Monahan October 15, 2014
There's nothing more fun than themed treats for your next tailgate party. But, as busy families, we want something that will come together quickly and still taste great, right?

Here are five simple and delicious tailgate treats, ranging from dessert to appetizer to entrée. None takes more than 20 minutes to make, and your fans will love them all!

Football Brownies

Ingredients:
  • Brownies
  • White gel frosting
How to:
  • Buy a tray of pre-made brownies and cut into football shapes.
  • Use white gel frosting to make the football laces.
Total Time: Five minutes

Tip: These are super cute and yummy, but the shape of a football is odd and you end up with a lot of leftover brownies. You can't cut them too small or they don't come out of the pan easily.

Touchdown Strawberries

Ingredients:
  • Strawberries
  • Semi-sweet chocolate
  • White gel frosting
How to:
  • Melt the chocolate and roll the strawberries in it.
  • Place the strawberries, flat-end-down, on a sheet of wax paper to allow the chocolate to set.
  • After chocolate has set, use the frosting to make the football lacing.
Total time: 15 minutes to make, and 2-3 hours to set

Tip: I love chocolate-covered strawberries, but I always forget how long the chocolate takes to set. If possible, leave them in the fridge overnight.

End Zone Deviled Eggs

Ingredients:
  • 6 hard-cooked eggs, peeled
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise or greek yogurt
  • 1 tsp. yellow mustard
  • Dash of salt & pepper
  • Chives
How to:
  • Cut the eggs in half and remove the yolks.
  • Mash the yolk, mayo, mustard, salt, and pepper. Fill empty egg whites with mixture.
  • Cut or rip the chives into small pieces and place on the eggs to look like laces.
Total Time: 15 minutes

Tip: These are gone within minutes of making them; so I always double the amount!

Stadium Seating Bean Dip

Ingredients:
  • Salsa
  • Guacamole (we used three avocados)
  • One can refried beans
  • Chips
  • Sour cream
  • Cherry tomatoes (optional)
How to:
  • Scoop the refried beans to fill one-fourth to one-eighth of each end of a 13 x 9 dish.
  • Use guacamole next to make the "field," and filling the dish three-fourths to seven-eighths full. (Refer to picture at top of article.)
  • Lastly pour in the salsa, and place chips at both ends for the stands.
  • Put sour cream into a frosting bag (or a sandwich bag with the corner cut off) and make the marks and lines on the field.
  • Optional: Use cherry tomatoes as players.
Total Time: 10 minutes

Tip: Make sure to start with the re-fried beans first; the salsa will run everywhere. This dish does not travel in the car well; make it on site.

Pigskin Pizza

Ingredients:
  • Pizza dough
  • Marinara sauce
  • Mozzarella cheese
  • Pizza toppings
  • Herbs
  • Olive oil
How to:
  • Preheat oven as specified on pizza dough instructions.
  • Shape pizza dough into a football on a greased pizza sheet.
  • Top with marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese, and whatever toppings you like. We used pepperoni, oregano and basil (fresh from the garden).
  • Brush olive oil on the crust to give it a little crunch.
Time: 5 minutes to assemble, 12 minutes to cook

Tip: We used pepperoni to make football laces but you could use almost any kind of topping that you like.
