Leaf Lacing Cards

Welcome Fall (almost)!

By Michelle Melnik, Macaroni Kid Deerfield-Greenfield, MA September 12, 2012

I realize that it is not Fall, yet, but it's starting to feel like it. The first day of Fall this year is September 22, but it's mid-September and the hot summer weather is starting to break. Here's a perfect activity to welcome Fall.

Up until this point, we have kept our distance from lacing cards. Although I've tried them once or twice, I don't think my daughter was too interested. Lacing cards do help to improve a child's hand/eye coordination, as well as their fine motor skills. As you know, sometimes when working with preschoolers you have to adjust activities to make them age-appropriate, and this may be one of those activities.

Materials:

  • Construction paper (brown, red, orange, yellow)
  • Glue
  • Hole punch
  • Ribbon or string
  • Glue stick

Instructions:

  • Draw or trace a tree trunk on brown construction paper.
  • Draw or trace some colorful Fall leaves.
  • Punch holes in the leaves (for younger children, punch larger holes).
  • Show your child how to thread the ribbon through the leaves. (Please never leave young children unattended with ribbon or string).
  • When your child is finished lacing, tie a knot in the ribbon, and have him or her glue the leaves to the tree.

Once you are done with this craft, have fun searching for leaves, apples, pumpkins, and everything else that is so festively Fall.
