There are many fantastic reasons to have your kids involved in martial arts. We've chosen Universal Taekwondo in Thornton near 112th & Colorado for my son, and I absolutely love the life lessons he learns from the instructors and other students.
Last Friday was their belt testing day, which they had worked hard toward for several weeks. To move up a belt, students have to show their proficiency by earning stripes, and they can only test if they have earned all five stripes.
The students then demonstrate those skills in front of a board of black belts from the studio, who evaluate them and share feedback.

For our son, belt testing can be nerve-wracking but also motivating at the same time. He knows they want him to succeed, and he wants to show them that he's ready to move up to the next belt. In the weeks leading up to testing, he'd often be found practicing his skills at home, ensuring that he was ready. He also diligently learned the Korean vocabulary for the specific words required of white belts. He's dyslexic, and this is super hard for him, but he dedicated himself to learning them.
On testing day, you could see the determination in his eyes. He was ready. First up was the vocabulary test, the hardest challenge for him. He sat down with his clipboard, took a deep breath, and a few minutes later, he had a big smile of confidence on his face when he turned it in.
Next up was sharing his refined skills with the panel of black belts. He was focused and energetic as he went through everything he had learned.

At the end of belt testing, Master Mike shared encouraging words with the candidates. He praised them for their hard work and encouraged them to become leaders in the studio and their community. He spoke about how taekwondo is a way to learn those skills and grow their confidence and determination.
That's one of the reasons Universal Taekwondo has been our home for our children's martial arts journey. I see how the instructors challenge the students to grow in an affirming and kind way. They want the best for them and push them to find that in themselves.
I know that on testing night when my son turned around with a huge, proud smile on his face, they had accomplished that with him. And I can't wait to watch him test for his next belt!
