I started to ski when I was a young girl. I must have been in 3rd grade (living in Seattle) when we spent several weekends in a row at ski school, and then skied with my family for a week here in Denver or Utah. Then as I got older, I had some wonderful trips with my cousins and friends for ski trips. I have so many fond memoriesof being in ski towns, so this year, when we decided it was time to take our family out skiing together for the first time, I was so excitedto create these memories with them! And I can't think of a better first family ski trip than Breckenridge, we had the best time!
We stayed in a condo at the Village of a Breckenridge, right at the bottom of peak nine. This was the perfect place to stay with our kids. Not only could we walk out of the condo and walk a few feet to the Quicksilver SuperChair, but it was a very family-friendly part of the mountain. My kids had done indoor ski lessons, but neither had been on snow yet, so we hiked up to the magic carpet to give them their first taste of skis on snow. My daughter was quickly over the magic carpet and headed up the T-bar just beyond the magic carpet. After a couple of runson that, she headed up the Quicksilver life to ski a green, and she never looked back!
The kids definitely weren't ready for a full day on the mountain, so on the second day it was really nice for the kids to be able to hang out at the condo in the morning, and then head out to ski in the afternoon. (My husband and I were switching between skiing alone and watching the kids so we could get some adult skiing time in!)
One day I headed to the top of peak seven's Independence SuperChair to check out the newest on-mountain dining restaurant - Pioneer Crossing. It's a beautiful place to rest during your day on the slopes, grab a bite to eat, and enjoy the beautiful views!
Another place we wanted to visit while we were there was the new Candy Corner. I took my daughter with me to check it out the second day after we had skied a couple runs - and she was in heaven! I let her fill up a bag of candy a reasonable amount and we shared it together sitting on Adirondack chairs outside of TenMile station on a gorgeous day with a breathtaking view in front of us. Talk about making memories, that's one of my favorites! (We did a Facebook live while we were there, check it out here!)
We visited on a Sunday and a Monday, and even on the Sunday we skied, we were surprised at how it didn't seem crowded. We didn't realize there were so many peaks and variety of runs at Breckenridge, it's crazy how big it is! They do a great job of getting you up the mountain, so you can actually ski and not spend your day waiting in line. It has five huge peaks, 2,908 acres, for terrain parks, a 22 foot Superpipe, 11 bowls, North America's highest chairlift and some of the country's best high alpine terrain, and one of the bet mountain towns anywhere!
Upcoming Events
The International Snow Sculpture Championships will be at Breckenridge Jan. 22-29, and I can imagine it's a pretty cool event! Snow carving in Breckenridge began as a local pastime; today, decorated snow artists from across the globe transform 20-ton blocks of snow into an outdoor art gallery. The Breckenridge Fine Arts Festival runs the same weekend as a fiery contrast of burning sculptures, pyrotechnical effects and other spark-filled attractions take place.
Spring fever! Breck will be one of the last major resorts still open when the biggest spring skiing party in the Rocky Mountains returns March 17 through April 22, 2018. Breckenridge's elevation - 9,600 feet in town - makes the snow last longer and the bluebird spring days even sweeter. To celebrate, Spring Fever brings a month-long lineup of activities for families, beer drinkers, music lovers, mountaineers, and more.
