Wolf Bites Food Truck - Run by Westminster HS Students!

August 19, 2021

In the Spring of last year, I was intrigued when I saw that Westminster High School was launching a food truck run by students.

We had the opportunity to meet some of the students and taste the delicious food this week and I can tell you that this program is thriving as they head into a new school year!

The food truck is a student-run enterprise led by culinary arts teacher, Chef Chris Hill. Students are running a mobile business and getting the full experience of being business owners. They're involved in budgeting, food planning, and preparation, but they're also getting experience with the behind-the-scenes work business owners do to keep their business running.

The day we visited, the students were offering their sandwiches menu and we sampled the patty melt sliders with fries - it was DELICIOUS! These students know what they're doing and I'm excited to visit them as they pop up around town! Several other menus are available for different events including Mexican and Italian.

A Team Effort Brought Wolf Bites Food Truck to Life!

Chef Chris Hill had been mulling over how to get students in the culinary arts Career Technical Education (CTE) program more hands-on experience. He knew a food truck would be the dream solution! Then they found out about an available grant from Perkins Innovation. Several groups in the Career Technical Education (CTE) program came together to create and present their vision, and they were awarded the grant to bring their vision to life! (Check out this great video about how the food truck idea came to life.)

Students from the business, graphic arts, information technology, and construction programs had the opportunity to work together to plan and create the food truck, and the culinary arts and agriculture students are now responsible for keeping the food truck moving forward.

Chef Chris was also recently nominated for a Lifechanger of the Year because of his work on the Wolf Bites Food Truck!

I love seeing career development opportunities like this in our community, especially for high school students. Allowing young adults to explore different careers and get hands-on experience is invaluable for their "real world" experience. So much emphasis is placed on preparing for college to pursue a good-paying job, but many careers are available that don't require college degrees that still provide a good income. It makes me really happy to see schools focusing on these opportunities too!

A big congratulations to Westminster High School, Chef Chris Hill, and all the students involved for getting this business up and running!
