Know the Signs of Disordered Breathing? Joyful Breathing Can Help!

January 6, 2022

Did you know that tongue motion and breathing are important factors to overall health? If something is off, it can create symptoms that you may not even relate to tongue or breathing issues!

Breathing is highly connected to the way the tongue and mouth are used. The way we use our tongue impacts our airway, teeth, oral development, craniofacial structure, head, and spinal posture.

Brittany Bailey and Joyful Breathing

More on the signs of disordered breathing in a minute, because first I’d like to introduce you to Brittany Bailey – the founder of Joyful Breathing in Northglenn

Joyful Breathing is a Myofunctional based practice with the specialty of Breathing Education where Brittany sees clients of all ages. Clients come to Brittany because they want to pursue better breathing and oral behaviors, including:

  • Orthodontic treatment
  • Orthodontic relapse
  • Finger/thumb sucking
  • TMJ issues
  • Anxiety
  • Asthma
  • Sleep apnea
  • Tongue tie care
  • Overall oral health and prevention for as young as newborns

"Brittany is thoughtful and deliberate with her workouts and coaching. Not only is she helping me, but also my 2 year-old and my husband. We all have very different needs and our plans are catered to that. I highly recommend her! I also love that she has her calendar available so you can easily book times that work for you." - Natalie H.

Brittany’s Personal Experience

Brittany became interested in Orofacial Myology and Breathing Education through personal experience.

She found a passion for Orofacial Myology initially as a patient seeking care for dental crowding and severe clenching. She ultimately learned so much as a patient and was able to pinpoint the jaw issues, avoiding relatively risky jaw surgery.

After going through the process and seeing the positive changes it made on her smile, confidence, and breathing, Brittany decided to pursue a career in Orofacial Myology to share what she had learned.

Brittany combined Orofacial Myology with Breathing Therapy later in her career after learning how much the two therapies complemented each other. She loves how Breathing Therapy sees the person rather than the “issue”, which aligns with the way she treats patients.

What is Orofacial Myology and Breathing Education?

Orofacial Myology is exercise-based education directed towards the muscles of the face including the lips and tongue. The goal of orofacial myology is to have positive behaviors that provide proper facial development, muscular tone, and maintenance.

Breathing Education is behavioral education based on the various ways breathing is accomplished. The goal of breathing education is to have positive habits that promote wellness as a whole.

Signs of Disordered Breathing

How do you know if you might need Orofacial Myology or Breathing Education? Here is a list of signs that may signify breathing challenges:

  • Quick inhales during speech (especially with kids)
  • High outbursts with emotions
  • Mouth breathing during sleep
  • Dark circles under eyes
  • Lisp
  • Attention difficulty
  • High energy followed by a "crash" of energy
  • Bedwetting
  • Night terrors/nightmares
  • Clenching/grinding
  • Asthma (exercise-induced)
  • Restlessness

At Joyful Breathing, Brittany works to promote positive changes but also retrain behaviors so that the change from treatment does not disappear. Her goal is to see positive maintainable changes.

"Both my son and I have experienced positive changes from our Myofunctional therapy. I highly recommend Brittany for your journey." - Alysha D.
