Ready to get out and explore for Spring Break? It will be here before you know it!
Not sure what to do? Susan Troy of Elite Travel Concierge (and also your Macaroni Kid publisher), has some ideas that are close to home and a little further away for you to consider! (And if you work with her it's even easier because you don't have to do the work - plus her planning services are included with any booking!)
🏔️ MOUNTAIN SKI TOWNS
The mountain ski towns are always fun to visit in the winter months, even if you’re not skiers! They all have their own personality and reasons to visit, and offer lots of winter activities including snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and tubing! The drawback to mountain ski towns during Spring Break is that they tend to more expensive than you think they’re going to be. Hotel rooms and rentals start around $300-$400/night.
Here are some of our favorites:
Vail – Vail is the cutest German/Swiss-inspired town with lots of dining and entertainment options. They even have a fun tubing hill!
Winter Park – We love Winter Park for the ski village vibe, ice skating rink, and proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park. If you’re looking for more affordable skiing head to Granby Ranch and stay in the town of Winter Park or Granby. An even bigger perk is the Ski Train that will bring you right to the Winter PArk ski resort from Denver!
Beaver Creek – I love Beaver Creek for its festive village and fantastic beginner terrain. I skied here often with my family as a child and have the best memories of enjoying a winter getaway with my family. My kids love the ice skating rink in the center of town (and as parents we love that there’s an outdoor bar nearby for us to enjoy while they skate their hearts out!)
Keystone – This is one of the most family-friendly places I’ve ever been to. From kids' goodie bags when you check-in, to a huge snow fort at the top of the mountain (which is sadly closed this year). I also love the proximity of Keystone to the Frisco Adventure Park for tubing.
Ski Cooper – Yes it’s Cooper, not Copper! This is a small locally owned ski hill and we are officially spoiled after skiing there in recent years. No shuttles from the parking lot, you basically park at the bottom of the lifts. Reasonable lift ticket prices (your whole family of four can ski for under $200 a day, less with the gems card, a super long magic carpet, and fantastic cruiser terrain make this a hit for our family. Stay nearby in Leadville and explore that area in between ski days!
🦒 COLORADO SPRINGS
If you haven’t been to Colorado Springs you should add it to your list! The Broadmoor offers a fantastic home base for activities like Garden of the Gods, Cheyenne Zoo, Manitou Cliff Dwellings and so much more!
🏜️ MOAB
Looking for something warmer? Moab is just six hours away and has an average high in March of 65 degrees! It’s far enough away to feel like you’re in a new environment and full of lots of outdoor adventure. Tons of hiking and other tourist activities including desert jeep tours!
🏜️ SCOTTSDALE
It’s a 15-hour drive (or a quick 90-minute flight), but will give you a break from the winter blahs! We spend a lot of time in Scottsdale and love it for beautiful desert vistas, incredible sunsets, fantastic hiking, and pool time! And on the way, you can stop at the Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest - two more jr. ranger badges for your kids!
