The US's Largest 3-D Printed Art Piece is Coming to Thornton this Sept

By Press Release from Thornton Arts & Culture August 18, 2022

Since the 1980s, 3D printing has been making a splash in the tech industry. It has come such a long way that individuals can now 3D print small-scale creations in their own homes. But what about the BIG stuff?

Thornton Arts and Culture Division will install a new public art piece at a major I-25 gateway this fall. The 34-foot-tall contemporary sculpture, created by Portland Oregon artist Volkan Alkanoglu, will be the largest 3D printed sculpture of its kind in the United States and the second largest in the world.

When and Where to Find the 3D Printed Art Installation

The 3D printed art installation will be located on the median at East 136th Avenue between I-25 and Lincoln Street and is scheduled to be ready for viewers in late September.

“The beauty of this large-scale sculpture is how it was envisioned and created out of 3-D printed carbon fiber that will withstand Colorado’s extreme weather and incorporates technology to make it sustainable,” says Zimmerman. “Mr. Alkanoglu’s design reflects Thornton’s continued growth as a progressive city and beacon for iconic public art.”
