Unite Against Book Bans Celebrates Right to Read Day on April 24

April 20, 2023

On April 24th, book lovers and advocates for intellectual freedom will come together to celebrate Right to Read Day, a day that acknowledges the human right to access and read books without censorship or restrictions.

Book banning is a serious issue that continues to affect communities across the country. Some books have been banned or challenged for their controversial subject matter, such as "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "The Catcher in the Rye." Others have been targeted due to their LGBTQ+ content or depictions of marginalized communities.

Banning books limits our ability to learn, grow, and understand the world around us. Reading diverse perspectives and experiences is critical to developing empathy and building a more inclusive society.

On Right to Read Day, Unite Against Book Bans encourages individuals to take action by reading a banned book, sharing their support on social media, or advocating for intellectual freedom in their community. Together, we can defend our right to read and ensure that everyone has access to a wide range of literature.

Want to learn about the most frequently challenged books? The 10 Most Challenged Books Lists are curated each year by the American Library Association. The 2022 list will be unveiled on April 24th to coincide with Right to Read Day and National Library Week.
