Chiropractic Adjustments: A Boost for the Nervous System

November 2, 2023

I know after seeing Dr. Courtney at Kindred Family Chiropractic that my body always feels better. But what I didn't realize (until we started seeing her) is that your nervous system feels better after an adjustment too!

🧠 The Nervous System

The nervous system is the body's control center, responsible for coordinating all of its functions, from breathing to digestion to movement.

When the nervous system is healthy, it allows us to function at our best.

However, when the nervous system is compromised, it can lead to a variety of problems, including pain, fatigue, headaches, and difficulty concentrating.

🧩 Parts of the Nervous System

The two parts of the nervous system - sympathetic and parasympathetic - work together to maintain balance in the body, but they have opposite effects.

The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for the "fight or flight" response. When we are faced with a perceived threat, the sympathetic nervous system releases hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, which prepare the body for action. This includes increasing heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing, and dilating pupils. The sympathetic nervous system also diverts blood away from non-essential organs such as the digestive system and towards the muscles, so that we can either fight or flee the threat.

The parasympathetic nervous system, on the other hand, is responsible for the "rest and digest" response. When we are safe and relaxed, the parasympathetic nervous system takes over and slows down the body's functions. This includes decreasing heart rate and blood pressure, constricting pupils, and stimulating digestion. The parasympathetic nervous system also helps to restore the body's energy levels after a period of stress.

🌟 The goal for our nervous system is to be highly adaptable! We want to be able to deal with stress as it comes, but then be able to switch easily to rest and digest.

But we often get stuck in fight or flight when physical, mental, or emotional stress is greater than our body’s ability to adapt.

🤯So how does chiropractic care actually help the nervous system?

Chiropractic adjustments take physical stress off the body and can lessen the overall stress load on the body since the spine is the housing of the nervous system. This helps it regulate and adapt more efficiently so we don't get stuck. When your nervous system is cared for your body will be more adaptable and you'll likely reduce your stress, improve your sleep, reduce your pain, and improve your mood.

That's something all of us, especially moms, can use in our daily lives!
